Canned Tuna Recall 2026

FDA Warns of Botulism Risk in 9 States After Distribution Error

The FDA has issued a dire safety alert regarding the Genova brand canned tuna that was unintentionally distributed to big retailers in nine states, one of which is Ohio, California, and Michigan. Check your pantry right away. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an urgent safety alert concerning Genova brand canned tuna, which was accidentally shipped to major retailers in nine states, including Ohio, California, and Michigan. This warning that dated January 2026 comes from an incident where the product was distributed to the market despite being under the control of health authorities and being at a risk of a potentially fatal botulism outbreak.

So, what’s the reason behind this new canned tuna recall?

This is not a new production issue but rather a significant error in logistics. Some reports suggest that Tri-Union Seafoods has found out that a third-party distributor has unintentionally released stock that was quarantined due to recall in February 2025. The original recall was imposed due to a manufacturing defect in the “easy open” pull-tab lids. This defect can compromise the airtight seal of the can, allowing the bacteria Clostridium botulinum, the one that causes botulism, to grow.

Which Products Are Affected?

The recall specifically targets Genova Yellowfin Tuna sold in 5-ounce cans. Consumers should check the bottom of their cans for the following UPCs and codes:

States and Stores Affected

The tuna that was recalled made its way by mistake to a number of large grocery chains. If you are a customer at the mentioned retailers in the mentioned states, you could be in danger:

  • Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Wisconsin: Meijer outlets.
  • Maryland and Virginia: Giant Food stores.

The Danger of Botulism

Botulism is a rare but life-threatening form of food poisoning. It attacks the body’s nerves and can cause paralysis or death if not treated immediately.

  • Drooping eyelids
  • Slurred speech or difficulty swallowing
  • Muscle weakness
  • Respiratory distress

If you have consumed the product and feel unwell, seek medical attention immediately.

What Should You Do Next?

  1. Return it: Take the product back to the store where you bought it for a full refund.
  2. Discard it: Throw the product away in a secure trash can so pets or wildlife cannot access it.
  3. Contact the manufacturer: Reach out to Tri-Union Seafoods at 833-374-0171 or email their support desk to request a retrieval kit and a replacement coupon.
